On July 28 at 19:00, Baltic Analog Lab and festival Skaņu mežs invite you to the latest edition of our event series, Resonance Residence, featuring current artists-in-residence. This month’s program includes a performance by Mosquito Farm (UK), as well film loops by Gareth Byrne (IE).
Mosquito Farm, an artist's band and collaboration between Maddie Banwell and Grace Black, began in 2022. Their performances utilize an array of collected or handmade instruments, props and devices - these can be mechanical, electronic or acoustic. Mechanisms are either designed from scratch, or mis-used and re-purposed consumer electronics like computer fans or bathroom extractors. Noisy, lively, sometimes messy, their work can seem on the verge of collapse.
Part of their time in Riga has been spent fabricating new instruments, including both mechanically and breath-driven reed instruments, bellows and novelty singing biscuit tins. Also on the residency they have been developing new ideas for performance and composition like exploring ways to use the body through dance and movement.
Gareth Byrne is an Irish moving image maker. Gareth's process-led practice explores materiality through darkroom processes, found materials, and image transformation, often in collaboration with musicians and dancers. Their work is driven by an interest in rhythm, repetition, and the physical qualities of analogue film.
During the residency, Gareth has been developing a series of film loops using optical printing methods and darkroom processes for a future live performance with a long-term musical collaborator (Sour Blood), while also informing future moving image work.
Residence (pre-Process) Residence is event series showcasing created works within BAL and Saņu mežs residence by the residing artists who spent month in BAL lab creating films or working with Erica Synths modular synths at our residency space.
The event will take place in the Baltic Analog Lab 2nd-floor residence rooms, Lienes iela 19a.
Event language: English.
Free admission, drinks for donation.
Residency is supported by the Latvian State Culture Capital Foundation, Riga City Council
