Introduction by Ieva Balode
Kino Bize in collaboration with Baltic Analog Lab presents a special screening "Phantom Islands" - a film of an Iranian/Irish filmmaker Rouzbeh Rashidi who is also a founder of Experimental Film Society - film collective and a production company from Ireland.
Phantom Islands is an experimental film that exists at the boundary of documentary and fiction. It follows a couple adrift and disoriented in the stunning landscape of Ireland’s islands. Yet this deliberately melodramatic romance is constantly questioned by a provocative cinematic approach that ultimately results in a hypnotic and visceral inquiry into the very possibility of documentary objectivity. For the past fourteen years, I’ve been working constantly to create a truly alternative vision of Irish cinema. PhantomIslands is the culmination of this process so far.
Phantom Islands, was completed at the start of the year 2018. Funded by The Arts Council of Ireland, it premiered at Dublin International Film Festival. Since then it has received twenty-two screenings in festivals and at cinemas around the world, including the Cinemateca Portuguesa (Portugal), Festival du Nouveau Cinéma (Canada), Thai Film Archive (Thailand) and Kino Meeting Point (Bosnia and Herzegovina). It won the Best Experimental Feature Film award at Istanbul International Experimental Film Festival and had an entire issue of the magazine Film Panic exclusively dedicated to its making. It has been widely written about by critics such as Adrian Martin and Fergus Daly, and in journals including Desistfilm, The Art(s) of Slow Cinema and CinePensieri.
Rouzbeh Rashidi (born in Tehran, 1980) is an Iranian-Irish filmmaker. He has been making films since 2000, at which time he founded theExperimental Film Society in Tehran. He has always worked completely away from mainstream conceptions of filmmaking, striving to escape the stereotypes of conventional storytelling. Instead, he roots his cinematic style in a poetic interaction of image and sound. He generally eschews scriptwriting, seeing the process of making moving images as exploration rather than illustration. His work is deeply engaged with film history.
