On April 24th, at 7pm Baltic Analog Lab and festival Skaņu Mežs invites you to meet our current artists-in-residence - Sabine Gruffat and Elen Huynh.

Sabine will demonstrate 16mm films of the invisible spectrum using ultraviolet reflectance and fluorescence. As a sound artist, Elen will present pieces created during her residency — immersive soundscapes that weave together local field recordings and Latvian poetry as well as analog synths from Erica Synths.

Sabine Gruffat is a French-American artist born in Bangkok, Thailand. She works with experimental video and animation, media-enhanced performance, participatory public art, and immersive installation. She has a special interest in the social and political implications of media and technology. Over the years he has made two feature film essays about landscapes in Detroit, Dubai, and Spain after financial collapses, and many experimental films and videos using hybrid digital and analog methods.

During her residency in Riga Sabine has been working with ultraviolet lights and flowers, X-ray films and scientific optical filters. In this work she explores how to make the invisible spectrum visible using UV lenses and natural fluorescence on lichen, flowers and other plants. In the event you will have a chance to see both her previous works and film experiments done during residency.

Elen Huynh is a French sound recordist, composer, and music selector based in Paris. She also runs the tape label “Choses Contraires", which shares its name with her show on LYL Radio. Through the label, she has released a compilation and an album — both collaborative works stemming from the radio show, where she invites guests to explore the boundaries between words and sounds by combining spoken word, field recordings, and music. Elen will perform using analog synths that are available at BAL residency and donated by Erica Synths.

During her stay in Riga, Elen has been working on bringing everyday reality into abstract territories by combining vocal idiosyncrasies, textural soundscapes, field recordings and processed found objects. In her performance she will be performing using Erica Synths equipment at our residency space.

The event will take place in the Baltic Analog Lab 2nd-floor residence rooms, Lienes iela 19a.
Event language: English.
Free admission, drinks for donation.
BAL Residency is supported by the Latvian State Culture Capital Foundation.
